Growing at Oasis Farm, Overcoming Restrictions With the Assistance of Riding and Driving.
Go Forward, Inc. is a non-profit organization directed by Deborah Crosby and run out of her equine facility, Oasis Farm. Founded in 1999, the program was created to provide therapeutic and recreational horseback riding, driving, and other related activities to children and adults with disabilities or other restrictions, so as to positively impact their daily lives. It is currently working to become accredited by North American Riding for the Handicapped.
Therapeutic riding can provide many benefits, such as:
Enhancing coordination, balance, and muscle tone;
Improving concentration and attention span;
Increasing self-confidence and patience;
Increasing range of motion in the joints;
Improving respiration and circulation;
Improving hand-eye coordination and visual perception.
The program offers weekly therapeutic riding classes to no more than five students at a time. Students work in developing and reaching individual goals, depending upon their special needs and specific capabilities. Each has the opportunity to acquire horsemanship skills, such as safety around a horse, grooming, tacking, leading, mounting/dismounting, and riding a horse. The driving classes make the same opportunities available to those unable to ride or with an interest in driving.
The Volunteers assist the instructor and riders by serving as sidewalkers, or horse handlers, and leaders. Some volunteers work only with the animals, while others interact directly with students. All Go Forward volunteers complete a training sequence before they are permitted to work with students or horses. Volunteers play an important part in the student's overall development.
